The Upper West Side Apartment II is a proposed renovation of a two-bedroom apartment with service quarters in a lovely pre-war building near the American Museum of Natural History. The design strikes a balance between respecting the apartment’s history and with the needs of our bachelor client’s twenty-first century lifestyle. By carefully identifying walls to remove and openings to enlarge, what was once a series of disparate spaces—kitchen, dining, and living room—are now proposed to be a series of open and interconnected living spaces grounded by a suite of silver and warm wood tones with concrete accents. In the Master Suite, the bedroom incorporates a wall of custom wardrobe cabinetry with a custom oiled white oak platform bed. By incorporating an existing closet, the bathroom is enlarged with a separate toilet compartment from a concrete topped vanity and glass enclosed shower. Luxe marble slabs and tiles unify the space. Furnishings and details combine a modern and mid-century mentality while respecting the apartment’s highly coveted pre-war bones.
